Black Out fa parte dell'album Palette :

Billboard magazine listed the album at number one on its list of "Best K-Pop Albums of 2017".^[5] The album earned IU a Melon Music Award for Album of the Year, and a nomination for Artist of the Year and won Record of the Year (Album) in the 27th Seoul Music Awards. Palette also won "Best Pop Album" award at the 15th Korean Music Awards.^[6]

Il K-Pop è noto per la sua produzione brillante e brillante, senza un respiro o una nota fuori dal posto. "Black Out" allegramente non è questo. La sezione ritmica è rumorosa e irascibile. I sintetizzatori balbettano e inciampano. La performance vocale è senza fiato e freddamente distaccata e l'intera faccenda è completata da un assolo di chitarra traballante e stordito, anche se prezioso.

I testi sono una meditazione alticcia sulla natura fugace della felicità, dell'amore e della vita stessa; portando l'ascoltatore in un viaggio narrativo ebbro, leggermente apatico, ma serio. Per tutta la canzone siamo i guardoni di un narratore confuso che partecipa a una festa e rimugina sulla felicità e la miseria dell'eccessiva indulgenza e tenta di godersi veramente il momento, cazzo, ogni momento. Siamo condotti dal narratore attraverso conversazioni confuse, sconosciuti eccessivamente affettuosi, l'innamoramento per la  musica, l'innamoramento per il  DJ e, infine, visione doppia e caduta fisica.

I testi riescono a superare il mero edonismo con un riferimento intelligente e piuttosto sinistro al romanzo di Virginia Woolf, Mrs. Dalloway. Il romanzo ruota attorno al personaggio del titolo che organizza una festa sontuosa nell'Inghilterra del primo dopoguerra. Durante la festa uno degli invitati alla festa si suicida gettandosi da una finestra. La signora Dalloway "gradualmente arriva ad ammirare" il suicidio, come un atto "per conservare la purezza della sua felicità". A questo fa eco il testo "Oggi non tornerà mai più, giusto?/ Certo che non succederà/ Non voglio ricordare da questo momento in poi". Roba pesante per una festa.>>
